Though I know it has been mentioned previously that there are a TON of cat pictures out there, there still are some that stand out; I feel that this is one of them. You captured a beautiful expression and the focus is spot on! That being said, here are some of my comments regarding your questions:

First, the composition is really wonderful. I'm a fan of the rule of thirds, and I think you used it effectively here. Similarly, the negative space on the left of the image seems to balance out the photo relatively well. I would maybe like to see a little more "empty space" to the left (this could be more of a personal taste thing), since the image feels like it is sort of in between being a closer crop of the cat and a slightly more zoomed out shot. Hopefully that makes a slight bit of sense! Haha!

Next, the use of black and white here is perfect: I think that if it were a colored version, it might be a little too busy to really be able to focus on the main subject of the photograph. It adds almost a melancholy feel, when you look at it. One can definitely feel emotion emanating from this piece.

Finally, with regards to the background- I am torn. To one extent, it is a little distracting mainly due to the tree and the light filtering in from between the branches. On the other hand, it gives this shot a natural, almost spontaneous feel (as opposed to a staged or studio shot). So, here, I would say just go with what you like, or feel works with what you want to photograph to portray.

All in all, you did a great job! <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/c/c…" width="20" height="20" alt="" title="Clap"/>
